As of 1 September, all items intended for the new library in the Sainsbury Building have been moved out of the Department Library and from the Herbarium.

However, it was a much more difficult and time-consuming task than the movers anticipated, so although everything is now out of the crates, many items are not in their intended location and sequence in the new library – and many are still on the floor.

Please therefore continue to e-mail library@plantsci.cam.ac.uk if you need to consult:

Any item from the Simpson collection
Any item that used to be in the Herbarium
Floras, monographs and taxonomic works

I will do my best to retrieve it for you within a couple of days. As it stands, items from the new library may be borrowed, but currently I will have to find books and sign them out on your behalf.

It is hoped that by the beginning of term there will be a semblance of order in the new library, but please continue to e-mail library@plantsci.cam.ac.uk if you need help. I will be providing information on the locations of sections of stock in due course.

MEANWHILE, back at the ‘old’ library, books are being moved into the spaces created by removals. Perhaps of more interest, the journals have been moved, into one straight alphabetical sequence. As they are now down from the high shelves, it is possible to browse journals. Many are on the mezzanine floor upstairs. You will be amazed at the wealth of plant-related older serials held in the library, including many ecology-related items, and a surprisingly large number of forestry journals. Just because a paper is old and isn’t online doesn’t mean it cannot be of importance in your research. Check out the shelves! Pick off a volume or two! See what you might find!

A period of relative calm…

As of 15 August, all the general journals have been thrown out [they are still held in other Cambridge libraries], and the movers have taken everything from the Plant Scis Library that is being moved to the new library in the Sainsbury Building. The major disruption is therefore over, but we are still moving the journals to form one alphabetical sequence, and will then move the books to occupy the empty shelves in Bays 4 and 5. Consequently there will be some noise – and perhaps even a mild expletive or two - in the PS Library, as heavy bound journals are dropped on toes, etc.

Unfortunately the new library is still in a state of chaos. If you need an item from the Simpson Collection, a flora, a monograph, or a taxonomic work, please e-mail library@plantsci.cam.ac.uk so that it can be retrieved for you.

Update on the move

First rule of moving – things never go to plan.

SO – this means the movers did not finish on 28 July. They will be back on Thurs 4 Aug and subsequent Thursdays only. Unfortunately this means the disruption and mess will continue for longer than anticipated, and the easy location of stock in the new library will also be delayed.

The movers will begin to take all the books from the Herbarium, and some of the books from the Library, for transfer to the new library in the Sainsbury Building, on Tuesday 26 July. Although the move will be completed on Thursday 28 July, there will be considerable disruption and mess in both libraries for some weeks.
The Simpson Collection, plus all floras, monographs, and taxonomic works, will in future be housed in the library in the Sainsbury Building. Unfortunately, it will probably be some weeks before staff will easily be able to locate any item moving to the new library, except for books from the Simpson Collection.
The library catalogue will continue to show the old locations for some weeks, so contact us if you need to consult any material from the Library, giving us time to locate and fetch it! The Herbarium moves out of the current building on 26 July and will NOT BE ACCESSIBLE AT ALL UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
Please bear with us, and hopefully by October we will have two libraries with coherent collections, and better spaces to work in.

It’s all kicking off!

Starting on Monday 27 June 2011 there will be considerable disruption in the Plant Sciences Library. Initially, there will be no access to, or through, the library in the mornings. This will probably be for at least a week. We’ll keep trying to provide updated information.

After this phase, some of the books and journals currently house in the library, and the entire contents of the Herbarium, will be shipped out to the Sainsbury building. This should begin on Tuesday 26 July. Again, we’ll let you know.
